About

You can call me Angular. I’m a guy who writes about music theory stuff in specifically anime. Mostly. There’s a lot of interesting western theory that’s seeped into the culture of japanese anime music, and it’s easy to dismiss it all as “J-Rock/Pop/EDM” schlock. I’m here to prove otherwise that it can have its crazy smart moments between the high pitched cutsey vocals.

There are other sites that do this too, I believe. They’re quite neat as well. But we’re taking a bit more a technical approach than other places. Whether that’s good or not, you can make out for yourself. If you find yourself scratching your head at some of the concepts I spew out, I might’ve explained it elsewhere. If it’s really bothering you, I’ve got a small compendium of resources at the ready.

Hopefully I can help you figure out why we like certain things in this wide “genre” [Which is kind of a misnomer, but I digress] and explain the workings behind it, so you’ll realize it goes far beyond bubbly instrumental beats. But hey, it’s music theory – It’s simply a way to rationalize why and how we perceive it. And that perspective is always relative. Give it a go.

When I’m not writing about music theory, I also play music, as it turns out. You might see me at a con with a trombone or something. Meet up so we’re never lonely?
